I can deal with a lot of things, but regret isn't one of them. Usually I'm pretty good about following my gut. But lately, I haven't been trusting my instincts and have regretted it later. So today I vowed in my journal that I will trust my instincts. There, I've said it out loud. No turning back now .

We're supposed to get snow tomorrow. Finally. Been waiting all winter for this. PS-I'm a snow girl.

You know? The author/illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and so many others? Did you know he painted the tissue paper he used in his collages? The things you learn when you agree to go help the kids at elementary school! I painted a bunch of tissue papers this morning for them to use in their collages today ('cause I knew there wouldn't be enough time for them to paint, dry and collage). I am CRAZY about this technique! I'm off to go paste some in my journal now...

Shopping in the country on a chilly day

There's a big Groundhog Day sale at one of my favorite shops every year, and I usually miss it. But this year I decided to drive myself on over and check it out. Wow ... Lots of it was outside and let me tell ya, it was chilly! I saw a girl dressed in just a blouse, skinny jeans and boots ... carrying a sign that read "Bring Back Common Sense". Made me chuckle ... where's the camera when you need it? Anyhoo, just wanted to share my afternoon with you. Enjoy!

I don't think I've ever mentioned that for about 20 years I've been making and selling handmade cards. Recently, I received an order for 576 cards, so for the past 3 weeks, that's what I've been up to. And literally 5 minutes ago, I FINISHED! The box is stuffed, packed and ready to go! The cards are on their way to a big store in West Hollywood, CA. Who knows? Maybe one of my little babies will be discovered... Anybody care to guess how much a box of 576 cards weighs? Oh my golly, I've been working fast and furiously the last 2 weeks to meet a couple of deadlines. Tonight I {mostly} completed the sketchbook I'm submitting to The Sketchbook Project which is sponsored by The Brooklyn Art Library/Art House Co-op. http://www.arthousecoop.com/projects/sketchbookproject2012

Thought I'd post a delightful find that's available at the store. Every page of this oversized book from 1941 has a colorful illustration and poem. Had the opportunity to go to a barn sale about 30 miles away and boy was it ever c-c-c-cold! But it paid off within 5 minutes when I found this gorgeous old book of vintage wallpaper! Something about vintage wallpaper just makes me swoon ... the colors, the textures, the patterns. It's one of those things I just can't get enough of. Some designs in this book had coordinating borders and fabric swatches. You know how sometimes you go to Staples just to get white paper for your printer, but then you start looking around and -BAM- you find the niftiest new writing tablets? Well, that's what happened to me today. Since I own a shop, I don't usually advocate shopping elsewhere, but I just *had* to share these with you ... From top to bottom: Project pad with cheery binding Graph paper pad with bright green binding And (drool) a computation book that has numbers stamped on the interior pages that makes it look just like a modern day ledger! This one's made by "Gold Fibre". This would make a *perfect* journal!

The year has gotten off to a busy start. Was hoping to post every other day or so, but so far, that's not happening! But it's all good. Had a huge response to the treasure boxes (thank you everyone who ordered and if you didn't get to order one, don't worry, they'll be back again this year) and have been busy working on requests for some of my handiwork.

So ANYWAY, I wanted to share these absolutely adorable lamps I had made and just picked up the other day. I saw the idea in a book and thought maybe this could be a DIY project but then realized glass innards + electricity might be a bad combination, so I had them made by a professional. Can you tell what they are? Vintage thermoses! Love, love, love! Was thinking I'd sell them, but now think they need to live with me for awhile.

A new year already! A brand new year ready to be whatever you want it to be. What are your hopes and dreams for this year? Mine are to try new things, take some classes, create without comparing my work to others (SO hard for me), draw a *lot* more and complain less (or better yet, not at all) when I'm the last person in line.

Already got to work on the first two. 1) I received a request to make something I've never done before and I did that today (if the piece is accepted, I'll tell you all about it later) and 2) I've signed up to take Teresa McFayden's "Letter Whimsy" class which starts Jan 9. Journaling holiday style ...

Journaling during the holiday season is pure joy for me, so I thought I'd share a little of that joy with you ...

An abundance of holiday-themed papers and stamps arrives in your mailbox everyday, so you are never short on supplies.

Even a festive paper coffee cup leftover from a little afternoon pick-me-up at a favorite local eatery is journal fodder.

A favorite technique of mine is to use whatever scraps are lying on my desk leftover from the latest projects. Instant journal page + Clean desk = Happiness!

Here's a little break from the traditional red and green, plus it incorporates a piece of glittery gift wrap leftover from Christmas morning (another place to get great paper for free!)

Oh my gosh, I had the opportunity to see the movie "Hugo" today ... and I repeat, oh my gosh! I discovered the book quite by accident over a year ago while helping at the school library. The story was captivating and the format was unlike anything I'd seen before. So when I saw there was going to be a movie based on it, I was thrilled. I cannot express how beautiful this film is! The scenery, the costumes, the props ... an absolute treat for those of us who love all things vintage! I mistakenly went to the 3D showing, but am glad I did, and will see it again if I have the chance.

So if you can, I recommend stealing a little time this month and going to see this film!

The power of a punch card

Today I sold the very last computer punch card. This is significant for me because this was *the* item that got the wheels in my brain turning and launched the store! I found the cards at an estate sale in the basement of a small house and bought a few. After I left the sale, I kept wondering what would happen to those hundreds and hundreds(!) of cards, would they end up in the trash, could I use that many in my lifetime? Then I got to thinking that if I liked them that much, maybe other mixed-media artists would, too. So I called the guy who had held the sale and asked what was going to happen to all the leftover items. He said he and his crew were cleaning out the house the next day (cleaning out = throwing out). I asked if I could come back and get the cards and he said, sure. And the rest is history. So, thanks, little punch cards ... we've both come a long way :)

Fun with shells

Oh my, I've been away far too long! In a nutshell, been busy updating a beach house to get it ready for the rental market. Creating in a different way ... painting old furniture, making headboards from plywood, batting and canvas, putting together IKEA furniture! Lots of work, but lots of fun.

The piece I'm most excited about is this fireplace surround. It originally had pink tile that was falling off. I convinced my contractor that I wanted to do a shell surround and he arranged to have the metal mesh and substrate applied. My good friend and mosaic artist, Karen, helped me. With the placement of each shell we ooohed and ahhhhed. When we ran out of shells, we just went down to the beach and got more supplies!

I can't even express how thrilled I am with the way it turned out!

Barn Sale in Northern Virginia!

3 Sales in 3 Days!

Oh my gosh, I was in HEAVEN last weekend ... estate sale at an old house way out in the country Thursday (found a bunch of BINGO items), estate sale at a 100-year old dairy farm on Friday (that's it above) and one of my favorite outdoor once-a-month flea markets on Saturday! Got me thinking maybe it wasn't so bad my basement flooded so I had to clean out *old* old stuff 'cause now I have room for *new* old stuff.

Inside the barn. Where'd my middle go? (ah, if it were only that easy).

Holes in the barn floor were patched with pieces of old license plates! (no, I didn't pry them off the floor ... but I sure thought about it)

This too ... it's metal edging for around a garden ... just had to have it!

Cabinet card albums, anyone? At the outdoor flea market, I passed a booth on the way out that I'd passed on the way in, but my radar had failed to go off earlier ... there was a HUGE box of these! No photos, but gorgeous with lots of potential! He wanted $1000 for the lot(gulp), so I settled for only 20 of them. Will be posting soon. So many pictures, so little time

It's funny how when there's a lot going on, there's no time to write (and conversely, when there's time to write, there's nothing going on!) So I'm making myself take the time to start posting some pictures of activities, finds and adventure from the past 3 weeks. First up, Country Living Fair in Columbus, Ohio. First stop was to see Teri Kelly at Thrifty Trixie www.thriftytrixie.com (PS - Got a skirt *and* another jumper this year!)

My conclusion after about 5 minutes ... there are *so* many clever people out there in the world!

My sister and I spent about an hour pouring over the flashcards...

Southern charm

I just love the South ... the ocean, the salt marshes, the huge live oak trees dripping with Spanish Moss. And the antiques. Stopped in adorable Walterboro, SC, last week. They boast over 12 antique shops in this little town plus the SC Artisans Center. I wanted to give Walterboro a shout out because it was very quiet the day I was there, and it seemed they could use a few more visitors. So if you're ever driving down I-95, take exit 53 in South Carolina and enjoy a couple hours in Walterboro ... and buy something!

Every storefront had a traditional red rocker out front ... except the Artisan Center which had their own unique interpretation of the rocker!

Excited to share that one of my creations was included in the current issue of GreenCraft magazine (a Stampingon publication). Flea market clothing!

You never know what you're going to find at the flea market! This is the second time I've come across a wonderful artist named Bonnie Trivizas who takes old thrift store finds, cuts them up, combines them with other pieces and the result is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind wearable piece of art! Case in point ... this fabulous jacket! It started as a linen jacket. She trimmed off the bottom, then added part of an old plaid flannel skirt (note the buttons were part of the original skirt). Then you turn around and, oh-my-gosh, just look what she did to the back! It's got an Edwardian peplum thing going on, created from pieces of a second embroidered jacket. I asked to try it on, and whaddya know, it fit like it was made for me! So of course I had to have it! Bonnie's work is outstanding and I love that she does with old clothing what we do with old paper ... creates something extraordinary, unique and new out of the discarded, unwanted and old.

Summertime is baseball time (anybody watch the All*Star game last night?). To me, the highlight of the season was when my family took our annual trek to a Cincinnati Reds game; I'd have it marked on my Snoopy calendar for weeks! So I've been collecting old baseballs and softballs for the past few months ... I think they'll look great on display in an oversized footed glass container, don't you?

While I was in Brimfield, I met the most charming young man who had a booth filled with beautiful old bottles. That's what first drew me in. But after I selected a few bottles to buy, my eye wandered over to the little table with a pile of rusty stuff and a little hand-written sign that read "dig finds". Be still my heart! I asked the young man about these, and he said that he and his friends like to go out and dig up old things. Well, I told him that I had friends who like to *buy* old things, so I just got myself a great big pile of rusted metal, broken bits of combs and kitchen utensils, some kerosene lamp parts, a sardine tin and even some ceramic bottle stoppers. There were 2 fantastic almost-completely-rusted-out license plates that I passed on, but now I'm kinda regretting that. Anybody interested in those? OK, one more post about the cool stuff at Brimfield, then I promise to start showing what I found for all of you! A couple of you asked if I got the desk with the cubbies ... sadly, no. Just no place for it in my recently-reorganized-and-now-not-so-cluttered workspace. I *did*, however, get this awesome US Mail sign ... it's metal and is the kind they used to strap to the top of a car (in rural areas I assume). I may have run out of floor space, but I can still hang things from the ceiling! Also got the mail bag ... in case you can't tell, I've kinda got a thing for post office-related items. Which is why it was hard to pass up this treasure, too ... look at all those beautiful doors and mail cubbies! Loved, loved, loved this street sign, too ... but, alas, no place to put it, so I had to settle for a picture instead. Cool letters were everywhere! And hardware, too ... Got this table ... FOR FREE ... for my friends who paint furniture ... Also met some interesting people ... a man who creates props for the theatre, a charming fellow who makes magnifying glasses using old parasols for the base and a darling young man who plays the violin, sells old bottles and digs for treasure ... more on that soon!

I read an article entitled "10 secrets to Being Happy" in a magazine yesterday. And I about fell off my chair when I saw the #1 thing to do. Ready? DOODLING! The article stated that upbeat doodles ease stress and boost happiness! But I guess we art journaling doodlers already knew that, right?

Sketchbook Project: Part 2

Here is my sketchbook (I left out a few spreads because this post was getting very long). There was a list of about 30 themes from which to choose ... I chose "I am a Scavenger" ... it seemed like a perfect fit! Like many people, I stuck to my theme. Other people didn't ... and that was OK. I felt pressure to fill all my pages (OK, I did glue a few together to give some "oomph" to a spread and also to use up a few pages!). Other people didn't ... and that was OK. You could do pretty much whatever you wanted as long as the final book was the original size. Some people took out all the pages and rebound in new ones. A couple people took out all the pages and put in one giant sheet that folded back up neatly to fit within the confines of the sketchbook cover. Someone asked me if all the books went on tour ... yep! They were all cataloged and arranged neatly on the carts. The staff was continuously pulling and shelving books the whole time I was there. They seemed pretty organized and I would guess that all the carts could fit in the back of a large box-style delivery truck.

Sketchbook Project: Part 1

I had the opportunity to view the traveling tour of the Sketchbook Project 2011 when it stopped in Washington, DC this weekend. There were close to 10,000 books(!) so I barely scratched the surface. It was great fun to see my book tucked in there with all the others.

All the sketchbooks were organized on carts that were kept behind a barrier. You were able to check out 2 at a time ... you can see why I barely scratched the surface!

These are spreads from Pam Garrison's beautiful book! I could have looked at it for hours! There were books from at least 40 countries ...

All books had a theme ... this one was "Lines and Grids"...

If you're near the town of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin this month, there's a great book show going on at the Fond du Lac Public Library called "Cover to Cover". There are 2-D and 3-D pieces from 15 artists (including this piece from yours truly). The theme is the interpretation of the word "book" and the artwork ranges from altered books, to handmade books, to sculptures and collages. This is all being sponsored by Fond du Lac Visual Arts. Local travel inspiration

I've been following Mary Ann Moss's (or would that be Moss'?) trip through Paris on her blog http://dispatchfromla.typepad.com/ If you haven't seen her beautiful posts, I highly recommend it! I just loved her images of the everyday sights in Paris and the surrounding neighborhoods (as one of her early entries promises, you won't see any photos of her at the Eiffel Tower). Her awe-inspiring photos made me dream of how wonderful it would be to visit and photograph and journal about Paris ... or somewhere in the US ... or my state ... or maybe somewhere just an hour away ... and then it hit me. Why couldn't I do that in my *own* neighborhood? I bet myself that if I just stopped and looked, I could find some pretty cool things to photograph and to get myself inspired. And maybe, just maybe, my town looks different and exciting and new to someone else out there, and maybe they'd be inspired, too. So with that said, I give you the town of Vienna (Virginia) ...

A paper bag swap

I've had an idea for a paper bag swap in the back of my mind for awhile. My friend Mel over at Ephermeraology http://ephemeraology.blogspot.com/ had a post about grocery stores and bags and that got me thinking maybe there are other people out there who are interested in this sort of thing. I think it would be fun to see what kinds of graphics are found on paper bags from other parts of the country and other parts of the world (hint, hint ... would love some international players as well!) Plus it would be great to use all that paper in a journal, don't you think?

So here's what I propose ... gather up a collection of paper sacks ... new, old, grocery, pharmacy, bakery, whatever ... they don't even all have to be the same. Send them to me and I'll put together a packet of bags from other folks and send them back. That's it. Easy peasy. But first things first ... I guess we need to know how many players. Then I'll let everybody know the details of how many to send and what I'll need to cover postage to send them back out.

Happy Spring! Such a nice day, so I decided to do some block printing outside. This set of type blocks was a happy find at an estate sale several years ago and I just love to use them to print on different kinds of paper ... telephone book pages, kraft paper, old computer paper, maps, etc. I typically don't spell out anything ... just lay the letters out, ink them up and print!
